Perforated Metal at the Tampa Museum of Art

February 04, 2020

In previous blogs, we’ve pointed to notable locations and spaces that feature wire mesh or perforated metal material. From Toronto to Washington, DC – it’s clear that wire mesh and other metal products have proven themselves as aesthetically-intriguing architectural points of interest.

The Tampa Museum of Art

Florida’s Tampa-based Museum of Art is no exception, with its use of perforated metal as part of the structure’s exterior façade. The 66,000 square ft museum is located in the center of Tampa’s downtown, and operates as a cultural and community-based institution devoted to emphasizing the history and diversity the city has to offer.

The building is home to a broad range of exhibitions and programs that focus on ancient, modern, and contemporary styles of artwork. The Tampa Museum of Art is nationally recognized as one of the most notable major art destinations for both Tampa residents and visitors from across the globe.

Designed by San-Francisco based architect, Stanley Saitowitz – the award-winning museum is defined by its shimmering pierced aluminum exterior, expansive gallery spaces, semi-transparent ceilings, and polished flooring. The exterior façade of the building is defined by two layers of perforated metal, which gives it its high-shine, modern, metallic pierced look.

The Popularity of Metal Products for Architectural Use

Many of the structures we’ve looked at in prior blogs feature some sort of wire mesh or perforated metal product as part of their architectural fixtures. The popularity of metal products as architectural fixtures can draw aesthetic interest – providing a subtle, yet distinctly contemporary dimension to the interior or exterior of a structure.
