Product Spotlight: Insect (Window) Screen

August 29, 2018

Among our woven wire mesh products, Ferrier Wire offers a wide range of specialty insect (window) screens made from a variety of metals which are more aesthetically pleasing and longer-lasting than run-of-the-mill nylon insect screens.  We stock aluminum (bright and black), brass, bronze, copper and stainless steel insect screens.

Uses and Applications:  Insect screen is, of course, primarily used as an insect or window screen. In addition, we often see these products used as soffit vent screens.  The bronze and stainless steel screens can also be used where a tougher screen is required (pets, rodents).

All insect screens are woven wire mesh – they are made up of wires that are woven over and under each other like fabric.

Different metals have different specs and sizes as follows:

Aluminum (bright and black) insect screen:

18 x 16 mesh x .011” dia wire

Bright: 24, 36”, 48”, 60” and 72” x 100’ rolls, full rolls only

Black: 36” and 48” x 100’ rolls, full rolls only

Most economical form, and the easiest one to work with.

Brass insect screen:

16 x 16 mesh x .011” dia wire

60” x 100’ rolls, partials available

A bright yellow brass colour, it will tarnish in time. It is quite soft and easy to work with.

Bronze insect screen:

18 x 14 mesh x .011” dia wire

48” and 60” x 100’ rolls, partials available

Inisital warm bronze colour, which will eventually start to turn black. One of the most durable options (we have customers that have replaced bronze screen that lasted 70 years). More difficult to work with, as it is harder than the aluminum, brass, and copper products.

Copper insect screen:

16 x 16 mesh x .011” dia wire

36”, 48” and 60” x 100’ rolls, partials available

A bright orange colour which will patina in time. It is quite soft and easy to work with.

Stainless steel (type 304 and 316) insect screen:

18 x 18 mesh x .009” dia wire

48” x 100’ rolls, partials available

Stainless steel colour, but may contain lines in the mesh due to the different wire lots used when weaving it. Harder and more difficult to work with than the other materials.

Stock sizes are subject to change without notice; availability is subject to prior sale.

Ferrier Wire also offers the capability to take full rolls up to 48” wide and slit them down to coils as narrow as 3.5” wide.
